Synopsis: Kahlen is a Siren, bound to serve the Ocean by luring humans to watery graves with her voice, which is deadly to any human who hears it. Akinli is human—a kind, handsome boy who’s everything Kahlen ever dreamed of. Falling in love puts them both in danger . . . but Kahlen can’t bear to stay away. Will she risk everything to follow her heart?
I was really excited to read this book. It was originally self-published by the author in 2009, but then was re-written and re-published in 2016.
The cover is gorgeous. It probably doesn’t come across, but it has an iridescent sheen to it that is perfect for this ocean-based book.
The Siren was a very original story, which I always love. It was fun to get into the world, and I liked the realistic element. Often authors will mess up the fantasy-turned-realistic books, so it’s really unrealistic, but I liked how Kiera Cass did it.
I found the romance to be a bit lacking, especially when the synopsis really built it up. Nevertheless, I liked the story line.
The side characters were very likable (and had names that were much easier to pronounce). They had very different personalities, and I found that I could relate to all of them in different ways, without them all being the same.
I don’t like it when people assume that when two characters have different opinions, they have different personalities. That happens a lot when you see a group or family of characters who spend lots of time together. Thankfully, that was a problem.
I kept hoping for a happy ending for everyone – but by the ending, I realized it just wasn’t going to happen. There was no way.
So that made me sad, but it was fulfilling in it’s own way. I was satisfyingly happy. (Does that make sense to any of you?)
What did you think? Favorite part? Favorite character? Let me know!
